PRESS ACCREDITATION – Clipper 2017-18 Round the World Yacht Race

The Clipper 2017-18 Round the World Yacht Race departs Sunday 20 August at 1230 from Albert Dock, Liverpool, celebrating the eleventh edition of the biggest ocean race for amateur sailors.

On the starting gun, crowds of crew, supporters and spectators will watch the fleet set sail from the historic Merseyside waterfront, marking the beginning of the epic 40,000 nautical mile adventure around the world.

HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE:

  • 712 crew members representing 41 nationalities will participate in the entire race
  • The eight-leg race route will visit six continents and will take eleven months to complete
  • Nationalities represented: British, American, Australian, Chinese, German, French, South African, Irish, Canadian, Swiss, Dutch, New Zealander, Italian, Swedish, Brazilian, Belgian, Norwegian, Polish, Spanish, Indian, Russian, Argentinian, Danish, Mexican, Slovenian, Turkish, Austrian, Bulgarian, Chilean, Czech, Greek, Hong Kong, Japanese, Korean, Mauritian, Peruvian, Portuguese, Romanian, Uruguayan and the Cayman Islands.
  • With crew for the first time in the race’s 20-year history from Mauritius, Uruguay, the Czech Republic and the Cayman Islands
  • 111 Round the World crew members
  • 361 British crew members with 16 hailing from Liverpool and the North West
  • The amateur crew are largely novice – 40 per cent have never sailed before starting their training. Each yacht is under the command of a professional skipper

  • Fleet preparation day. Crew and skippers available for interview

WEDNESDAY 16 AUGUST – CLIPPER 2017-18 RACE VILLAGE OPENS

  • 1000 -1800: Public Open Boat Tours

THURSDAY 17 AUGUST

  • 0800 -0900: Official crew departure ceremony with teams on stage
  • 0915: Fleet departs Albert Dock, slipping lines to parade on River Mersey
  • 1115: Fleet parade of sail
  • 1230: Race Start
